What is Emotional Well-Being?

The more connected we are by technology, the more distance there is between each of us. We are more alone, left dealing with our thoughts and emotions. A lot of us ruled by them, instead of being in control.

Our emotional patterns start forming very early in life and over the years we develop a personality style that is unique to us.

Dr Davidson, a neuroscientist has determined distinct brain signals that link to 6 dimensions of personality or emotional style:

Resilience, Outlook, Social Intuition, Self Awareness, Sensitivity to Context and Attention Style.

Being emotionally healthy means being well balanced in these different dimensions.

A person with an extremely positive outlook, for example, may find himself stumbling through many obstacles he may have overlooked.

Similarly, someone’s extreme self awareness might lead to panic attacks or hypochondria.

But there is hope in this beautiful thing about our brain which is its ability to re-wire itself – or what is called ‘neuroplasticity’.

If being on the extreme of a certain dimension is hurting you, you can teach your brain to think differently. Techniques like Mindfulness Meditation or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy help achieve emotional balance.

A well adjusted inner life can improve your quality of life tremendously.
